WORKLOAD REQUIREMENTS.

To complete the first year of the Master (60 ECTS), the student must complete 1500 hours: 1200 in-person and 300 hours of supervised / independent work, including the Master’s Final Project. For completion, students must present at least one oral communication at a national or international congress.

For the Advanced Master (120 ECTS), students complete 3000 hours: 2400 in-person and 600 supervised / independent. Completion requires two oral communications at national or international congresses and one published scientific article.

THEORETICAL TRAINING.

Small-group seminars cover the following topics:

First Year:

  • Semester 1: Oral Surgery I; Periodontology; Research Methodology

  • Semester 2: Implantology; Peri-implant Diseases

Second Year:

  • Semester 1: Oral Surgery II; Research Methodology II

  • Semester 2: Bone Regeneration; Digital Dentistry

Third Year:

  • Mucogingival Surgery

CLINICAL PRACTICE.

Each year, practical training includes 960 hours of clinical practice with patients and 20 hours of laboratory practice under the direct supervision of faculty. Students participate in surgeries at the UB Dental Hospital and observe surgical procedures at affiliated hospitals.

Clinical activity is organized into four main areas:

Oral Surgery

Dentoalveolar surgery (extraction of impacted teeth, fenestrations, periapical surgeries, etc.), soft tissue surgery (biopsies, frenectomies, pre-prosthetic surgery), and treatment of cystic and tumorous pathologies of the jaws.

Students will have access to a high number of surgical procedures each year.

Oral Implantology

Placement of dental implants in patients with different types of edentulism; guided bone regeneration procedures (treatment of small bone defects; vertical and horizontal augmentations of the alveolar process, maxillary sinus lifts, block grafts…)

Maintenance

Maintenance of dental implants and treatment of peri-implantitis

Laser in Oral Surgery

Use of various types of lasers in oral surgical procedures (CO₂, ErCr:YSGG; Er:YAG, diodes).

The most common interventions are

  • Conventional and surgical extractions
  • Fenestration of impacted teeth
  • Periapical surgery
  • Placement of dental implants
  • Bone regeneration techniques (regeneration of dehiscences and fenestrations; horizontal and vertical augmentations, maxillary sinus lift, among others)
  • Peri-implant surgeries (resective, regenerative or combined approach)
  • Navigated surgery (dynamic computer-assisted surgery systems, dCAS)
  • Biopsies
  • Excision of cystic lesions of the jaws
  • Closure of oroantral communications
  • Bronchectomy
  • Laser surgery
  • Mucogingival surgery

MASTER’S FINAL PROJECT.

The preparation of a Final Master’s Project (TFM) is mandatory to complete each of the Continuing Education Master’s programs “Oral Surgery and Implantology” and “Advanced Oral Surgery and Implantology”

The Master’s Thesis for the Master’s Degree in “Oral Surgery and Implantology” has a workload of 125 hours of supervised/directed work (5 ECTS credits). The Master’s Thesis for the Master’s Degree in “Advanced Oral Surgery and Implantology” has a workload of 250 hours of supervised/directed work (10 ECTS credits).

Master’s theses consist of the development of a project, report, or study based on the knowledge acquired during the course of each program. Each Master’s thesis must be developed and presented independently.

Students are offered the opportunity to carry out their Master’s theses in some of the ongoing research projects at the Oral Surgery and Implantology service of the University of Barcelona.

DURATION.

The Continuing Education Master’s Degree in Oral Surgery and Implantology (60 ECTS credits) is a one-year program, running from September to September, full-time. The Continuing Education Master’s Degree in Advanced Oral Surgery and Implantology (120 ECTS credits) is a two-year program, running from September to September, full-time.

Students may combine the Master’s program with part-time work, provided it does not interfere with their dedication to the program.

TRAINING

SUPPLEMENTS

It is not necessary to complete additional training for admission to the Master’s program in “Oral Surgery and Implantology” if you come from the following qualifications:

Graduate in Dentistry

Bachelor of Dentistry

However, proof of English proficiency is required. Knowledge of research methodology and biostatistics will be considered an asset.

To enroll in the Master’s program “Advanced Oral Surgery and Implantology”, it is necessary to have completed the Master’s program “Oral Surgery and Implantology”.

LEARNING RESOURCES.

The program provides students with the necessary learning resources for each subject in the curriculum. These resources come from diverse sources: materials developed in-house or external resources of recognized quality. Furthermore, as students of the University of Barcelona, students will have access to the Learning and Research Resource Center (CRAI).

The CRAI offers various services, including access to libraries, information resources, and research support. It includes basic bibliographic materials, both physical and digital, digital databases, institutional repositories, and other specialized resources.
